What’s in Bloom – July 7, 2016

Staff Picks

Lavandula angustifolia 'Hidcote' lavender
Lavender is one of my all-time favorite aromatic herbs. This planting of ‘Hidcote’ (Lavandula angustifolia ‘Hidcote’) in the Bibby and Harold Alfond Children’s Garden is stunning as the flowers begin to open. In fact, the best time to collect lavender flowers is just before they open. Stash a bundle under your pillow or steep in the tub for a nice calming and relaxing effect. – Jen, horticulturist

Papaver somneriferum 'Black Peony'
In the Great Lawn East Bed (closest to the Lerner Garden entrance arch), be sure to check out the stunning Papaver somneriferum ‘Black Peony,’ an opium poppy cultivar. While the plants themselves are annual, opium poppies self seed readily, and the seeds are easily saved for sowing in the spring. This variety is supposed to be a double, but has proven to be a lovely mix or double and single flowers! – Syretha, horticulturist

Campanula poscharskyana
Campanula poscharskyana is seeding into the faces of the wall in the Giles Rhododendron Garden, and in full, glorious bloom! – Dan, horticulturist

angel's choir mix poppies
As soon as you walk out of the Visitors Center, this bright, beautiful natural bouquet of reds and pinks from Papaver rhoeas ‘Angel’s Choir Mixed’ catches your eye along the Great Lawn. Combined with the captivating granite and gold leaf sculpture “Ascension II,” this is something that can’t be missed! – Christabel, events & group tour coordinator

ROSA 'YELLOW SUBMARINE'-DS6_1273_SZ336
This Rosa ‘Yellow Submarine’ is in the Lerner Garden of the Five Senses – one word: STUNNING! – Will, horticulturist

Verbascum 'Christo's Yellow Lightning'
Verbascum (mullein) are awesome plants, not only for their beautiful towering flower stalks, but also because of their practical and medicinal uses. A tea made from the plant is a traditional treatment for respiratory problems, and an oil infusion can be used to treat ear infections. Another cool traditional use of this plant is for fishing. Fish are temporarily paralyzed by a compound in the Mullein seeds, causing them to float to the surface and be caught more easily. This beauty ‘Christo’s Yellow Lightning’ can be found in the Cleaver Event Lawn. – Anna, horticulturist

Penstemon digitalis 'Husker Red' beard-tongue
This Penstemon digitalis ‘Husker Red’ (beard-tongue) looks great along the Haney Hillside. – Patty, horticulturist

Oenothera fruticosa 'Fyrverkeri' fireworks sundrops
I love these happy little sundrops (Oenothera fruticosa ‘Fyrverkeri’) outside of the Bosarge Family Education Center! They look like the big brother of the buttercups that I used to pick when I was a kid. The bright, perky color are always good for a smile! – Taylor, office coordinator

Papaver somniferum Diane's Breadseed Poppies
Papaver somniferum (bread seed poppy) are WOW WOW WOW in the Kitchen Garden! – Diane, horticulturist

Sambucus racemosa red elderberry
Everyone always asks about this beautiful native red elderberry, or Sambucus racemosa, along the path in the Woodland Garden, which puts out white flowers on the spring and these brilliant red berries in July. – Sharmon, horticulturist

foxtail lily Eremurus stenophyllus
In the Perennial and Rose Garden you can’t miss the aptly named foxtail lilies (Eremurus stenophyllus). These tall beauties are actually native to South East Asia and the Himalayas, and can be tricky to grow here, mainly because of our wet winters. Last year nary a one bloomed, but this year they are happy as can be! Catch them while you can, they’ll be gone all too soon! – Syretha, horticulturist

Azalea 'Weston's Innocence'
Later season Azaleas are still showing good color, with ‘Weston’s Innocence’ showing off its delicate near-white blooms in the Giles Rhododendron Garden. – Dan, horticulturist
