We are honored to introduce a new collaboration between Coastal Maine Gardens and New York Botanical Garden:  “NYBG Summer in Coastal Maine.” Drawing Natural Science: Native Plants and Birds of Maine with Katie Lee is the program on Monday-Friday, July 9-13, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. each day. The class will be in the Bosarge Family Education Center at Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens.

Join renowned New York Botanical Garden’s art instructor Katie Lee as she brings this fundamental graphite drawing class to Coastal Maine! Birds such as cedar waxwings, ruby-throated hummingbirds, and black-capped chickadees are commonly found visiting and feeding on plants native to our region. Plant material, of course, can be brought into the classroom for close observation and drawing. Birds, however, do not sit still long enough for a fully rendered drawing. Different skills such as quick sketches, observational field notes, and good research photographs are required. Students will learn a number of techniques unique to rendering both plants and birds. Lunch is included in tuition.

Katie Lee earned a Certificate in Botanical Art and Illustration from the New York Botanical Garden, where she has taught for the past 20 years. An award-winning botanical and wildlife artist, she has illustrated several books, and her work is featured in museum collections and exhibitions around the world.

Pre-registration for this unique opportunity is required.  Member discounts will be offered to members of both New York Botanical Garden and Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. Register at 1-800-322-6924. Space is limited, so please be sure to register early.
