Fairy House Village 7-22-2013 (5)

The new wall at the back of the Fairy House Village opens a window to the forest.

At Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, forest fairies, elves, sprites, gnomes, and other creatures of the forest co-exist with our visitors and appreciate young humans’ efforts to design and build beautiful, useful structures for them. One of the first projects at the Gardens, long before we had ornamental gardens or buildings, was to create the Fairy House Village beside the Shoreland Trail. Waterfront real estate for the forest dwellers!

This year, we’ve taken our shorefront Fairy House Village to a new level, with magical and imaginative stone structures, stone walls, and kid-sized “furniture.” The opening celebration will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 24. Then, whenever you visit, stop by to experience this magical spot anew and admire the fairy houses. Or create your own.  We ask only that you follow the posted guidelines that include suggested building materials that help sustain the trees and other plants.
