Education & Fun – Children, Families, Schools
Engage youngsters’ natural curiosity with a program at Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. Children and their families can delve into the intriguing worlds of plants, gardens, nature, science, art, and culture. And to further enrich your learning experience, combine your children’s or family program with a visit to the Bibby and Harold Alfond Children’s Garden and the Lerner Garden of the Five Senses, or a walk along our many trails.
During the warmer months, we present the following daily activities in the Children’s Garden:
10:00 a.m. – Storytime (Story Barn)
11:00 a.m. – Garden Puppet Theater (Story Barn)
12:30 p.m. – Chicken Feeding (chicken coop)
2:00 p.m. – Nature Investigations (meets in the Story Barn to start)
New for summer of 2013 are Fairy Fridays, with special fairy-related activities. All visitors are invited to join in the fun!
We also offer nature camps and other exciting learning opportunities for kids of different age groups and interest. We welcome partnerships with schools and teachers, too.

Reflected in the Children’s Garden inspired by great children’s books by Maine authors is our devotion to learning and reading. The Story Barn, which has a pig weather vane and spider web taken right out of Charlotte’s Web, contains an astonishing collection of books for young visitors to read there or elsewhere in the garden. If you want to see a list of the books we feature and recommend, many with a Maine “accent,” and even a few in other languages, please click here.
We’re always looking for new additions for our Story Barn book collection. If you would like to donate a book or have title suggestions, please call (207) 633-4333. We accept copies of books or money to cover the cost of purchasing a book.
