      12. Donations Policy
        • Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens is asked to support many worthwhile charitable causes and events each year by donating admission tickets or memberships. We would like to grant such requests, but we, too, are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, striving to be as fiscally prudent as those numerous organizations requesting our support. Therefore, we must limit the number and type of contributions we make each year. Download our guidelines (PDF)

Arriving by Boat to Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens
– We can now welcome a limited number of guests arriving by boat. Moorings are free of charge with admission to the Gardens. They are available on a first-come, first-served basis (sorry, no reservations). Our dock (The Landing) is located on our shorefront just south of the Knickercane Bridge and just east of Hodgdon Island on the Back River in Boothbay. The GPS coordinates are 43°52’42.77″N 69°39’44.88″W.

At average cruising speed, travel time is about 25 minutes from the Southport Island Bridge and 45 minutes from Boothbay Harbor. The best route from the south is to come through Ebenecook Harbor and then around the northern end of Hodgdon Island under the Trevett then Knickercane bridges. From the north one can enter the Back River from the Sheepscot via the Cross River at the northern end of Barters Island and proceed south to the Knickercane Bridge.

    1. Small Boat Moorings – Our four (4) small boat guest moorings (CMBG 1-4) are available on a first-come, first-served basis. They are clearly marked and located just northwest and southwest of the dock. We ask that you adhere to the following rules:
      • Please respect our 3 hour tie up time limit per boat per day.
      • Do not tie up boats to our floats. The yellow zone is for loading and unloading only. We do have limited space to tie up kayaks only on the south end of the floats if you wish to paddle over for a visit. Please speak to dock personnel when you arrive.
      • CMBG is not responsible for items lost or stolen from boats or damage to boats from wakes, tides, or other craft while using our facility.
      • When using our facilities, boats must be moored properly, with adequate lines, and be properly fendered so as to protect the dock and adjacent boat(s).
      • Please return our courtesy dingy immediately and secure it to the dock so it will be available for other guests.
      • No overnight mooring or dockage please. Moorings are available daily only during business hours (9am-5pm). The gate will be locked after 5 pm. If you arrive during business hours and the gate is still locked, please call 207-633-4333 for assistance.
      • Maximum boat length on moorings is 32 feet. Maximum keel depth 5 feet.
    2. Boat Size and Water Depth
      • The Knickercane Bridge just to the north of the Landing is a fixed bridge with the following clearances in the middle of the channel.
      • Mean low tide: 17 feet from waterline to bottom of bridge span
      • Average high tide: 9 feet from waterline to bottom of bridge span.
      • Extreme high tide: 7 feet from waterline to bottom of bridge span.
      • At mean low tide there is a minimum of 5-6 feet water depth at both our dock and moorings.
    3. Large Boat Mooring
      • We do have one deep water mooring that can accept power and sail boats up to 50 feet in length with a maximum keel depth of 16 feet. It is located on the western side of Hodgdon Island. This mooring can be reserved for a maximum 24 hour stay at no charge with admission by calling our main number during business hours 207-633-4333 x 0. Guests will need to provide their own tender/dinghy for travel from the mooring to the Gardens.
    4. Garden Admission
      • Garden admission may be paid to dock personnel at the Gazebo on shore if they are available. If no one is available, please check in at the admissions desk in our Visitor Center at your earliest convenience.
    5. Please
      • Children under 12 must be supervised and must wear personal flotation devices while on floats and ramp.
      • No diving or swimming from the dock.
