Horticulture, What's In Bloom

Staff Picks

Hosta 'Whirlwind'
Hosta ‘Whirlwind’ and other cultivars are in bloom now in the Rhododendron Garden. While generally considered foliage plants, delicate lavender and/or white flowers crown these stalwart, leafy mounds. – Dan, horticulturist

Malope trifida
There are so many great plants blooming in the gardens this time of year that it’s hard to choose only one. Since I must, let’s take a moment to appreciate the beautiful and unusual Malope trifida with its edible blossoms. Such a gorgeous shade of magenta! Find it in the Cottage Garden section of the Bibby and Harold Alfond Children’s Garden. – Jen, horticulturist

Echinacea 'Hot Papaya'
It’s that Echinacea time of year! Our many varieties are in full bloom at the moment and looking spectacular! A crowd favorite is Echinacea ‘Hot Papaya,’ found in both the Great Lawn and the outer edge of the Perennial and Rose Garden. Come see them for yourself! – Syretha, horticulturist

Lilium 'Muscadet'
Lilium ‘Muscadet’ Oriental Lily is spectacular in the Cleaver Event Lawn. – Anna, horticulturist

Geranium 'Gerwat' Roxanne
The glamorous Geranium ‘Gerwat’ Roxanne can be found in between the Burpee kitchen Garden and the Bibby and Harold Alfond Children’s Garden. It is in bloom May to July, showing its magnificent violet petals. It is also extremely heat tolerant, which is helpful in times of drought. – Wilson, gardener

hydrangea
The sweep of white pom-poms blooming on the edge of the Great Lawn in a sweep around the Café windows – the beautiful, traditional white hydrangea. To me, it is the flower that tells me “Hey, you! Summer is truly – fully – really here!” It is a hardy shrub with those large flowers each comprised of those dainty little white petals. Such a romantic bloom… especially when it starts to “blush” in the late summer! Just a reminder of years gone by, they are, to me, just simply stunning and classic Maine beyond a doubt! – Alicia, gift shop manager

Profussion Double Deep
Profussion Double Deep Salmon creates a beautiful bed of color along the Visitor Center entrance walk. – Patty, horticulturist

Cardiocrinum cordatum var. glehnii is a Japanese native lily, and a most impressive plant! From what looks like a clump of skunk cabbage rises a scape with tubular, chartreuse flowers. See it in bloom in the ridge above the waterfall in the Giles Rhododendron Garden. – Dan, horticulturist
