Horticulture, What's In Bloom

Staff Picks

Lupinus 'My Castle' 640x480
Looking beautiful in the Great Lawn Ledge Bed at the moment is a new addition to CMBG – Lupinus ‘My Castle,’ a lovely pinkish red perennial lupine. Here’s hoping it seeds in everywhere! – Syretha, horticulturist

Clematis 'Rooguchi' 640x480
The loveliest little clematis is the Clematis ‘Rooguchi.’ With its dainty, dark purple, bell-shaped flowers and long season of bloom, you will find it pairs well with the deep yellows and oranges of Rudbeckia and Helenium. Left to ramble at its own free will or trained on a trellis, you won’t be disappointed with this wonderful member of the family Ranunculaceae. Find it on your journey through the Bibby and Harold Alfond Children’s Garden. – Jen, horticulturist

Tithonia 640x480
I love this Tithonia diversifolia in the Children’s Garden because it stands out in the garden with its bright color and pollinators love it, especially the monarchs. When fully mature, it will stand 5-6 ft. tall. – Erika, Youth and Family Coordinator

Mirabilis jalapa 640x480
Diane cleverly chose this salmon-colored Mirabilis jalapa for the entrance to the Clever Event Lawn because, as its common name Four O’clock suggests, the fragrant flowers will open up in the evening in time for weddings and other events. – Anna, horticulturist

Peruvian Lily 640x480
The Peruvian Lily (Alstroemeria aurea) growing in the Children’s Garden has a showy exotic bloom in the most brilliant and tropical shade of orange – perfect for summer! – Anna D., education assistant

Helianthus 'Strawberry Blonde' 640x480
Helianthus ‘Strawberry Blonde’ is is a great bloomer in the Kitchen Garden. – Diane, horticulturist

Iris Pair 640x480
Several cultivars of Iris ensata (Japanese Iris) are in bloom around the Lerner Garden pond. – Will, horticulturist

Drumstick Allium 640x480
This drumstick allium (allium sphaerocephalon) can be found in the Perennial and Rose Garden. I like all the variety of allium we have in the garden this year. When walking through the Gardens, kids of all ages like spotting all the beautiful flowers in different shapes! -Karen, summer camp coordinator

Hosta 'Church Mouse' 640x480
One of the cutest hostas ever, ‘Church Mouse’ is petite and has wavy blue-green foliage. In the Woodland Garden. – Sharmon, horticulturist

Purple Podded Pea 640x480
This incredibly dark purple podded pea (Pisum sativum ‘Shiraz’) is a show stopper for your ornamental vegetable garden! It took over ten years to develop this gorgeous mildew resistant variety by one of Britain’s top vegetable seed breeders. This specimen can be found in the Burpee Kitchen Garden. – Vanessa, interpretation and exhibits coordinator

Processed with VSCO with c1 preset
The pond in the Bibby and Harold Alfond Children’s Garden is home not only to fish and frogs, but also to some beautiful water lilies. The Nymphea ‘Gold Medal’ is a hardy water lily, and is closely related to the water lilies Monet painted in Giverny, France. The flowers give us our own little taste of Monet’s garden, and the lily pads are often resting spots for the pond’s resident frogs. – Esther, education intern

Calycanthus 'Aphrodite' sweetshrub 640x480
Calycanthus ‘Aphrodite’ is sweet near the Visitor Center Entrance Walk. – Patty, horticulturist

Spirea japonica 'Anthony Waterer'
In the Perennial and Rose Garden, the Spirea japonica ‘Anthony Waterer’ is looking stunning! This impossible to kill plant is a great selection for any gardener looking for a low maintenance shrub that can be aggressively cut back yearly and still look great! – Syretha, horticulturist

Calamagrostis X acutiflora 'Stricta' Feather Reed Grass 640x480
Shout out to this beautiful planting in the Great Lawn by George Sherwood’s ‘Wind Orchid.’ I love the Feather Reed Grass (Calamagrostis) with the Purple Poppy-mallow (Callirhoe), especially on a foggy morning. – Anna, horticulturist

Tricyrtis 'Autumn Glow' 640x480
My newest Tricyrtis, or Toad lily, ‘Autumn Glow’ is steering to bloom–Autumn is still a ways away, I hope it turns out to be a long-bloomer like the other two Tricyrtis varieties in the Woodland Garden. I love the variegated foliage on this cultivar. – Sharmon, horticulturist
