Budding Naturalist: Vernal Pools, Session 1 (Ages 10-14)

April 15 @ 12:30 pm - 3:00 pm

A yellow-spotted salamander crossing to a vernal pool in early spring.

Does your child love nature and want to expand their identification skills? In this special COVID-adapted program geared toward older students ages 10-14, participants can join our experts for weekly small-group outdoor sessions. Though programming will take place outdoors, participants are required to wear a face covering at all times.

In April, Maine’s amphibians migrate to vernal pools to breed and lay eggs. During this session, participants will spend time exploring the Gardens’ many vernal pools in search of, among other residents, wood frog and spotted salamander eggs. Participants will learn how to tell the difference between these eggs as they help count egg masses for our annual survey. They will also learn what makes vernal pools unique and important, gaining an understanding of their role in the forest ecosystem.

Please note: In an effort to keep the group size small, this is a drop-off program. If your child would be more comfortable with you nearby, please contact Erika Huber at ehuber@mainegardens.org before the session to discuss options.  If this session is full, please call 207-633-8000 to be added to our waiting list.

Erika Huber is the Youth and Family Program Coordinator for Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. She holds degrees in forestry and horticulture and has over ten years’ experience working with children in environmental and gardening education.
