April is a big month for amphibians in Maine as they migrate to vernal pools to breed and lay eggs. Come explore the Gardens’ many vernal pools in search of wood frog and spotted salamander eggs as well as other seasonal residents. Learn how to tell the difference between frog and salamander eggs and help count the egg masses for our annual survey! Learn what makes vernal pools unique, and gain an understanding of their important role in the forest ecosystem.

We’ll return to some pools visited last session and explore new ones, observing changes in wood frog and spotted salamander egg masses. We’ll identify differences between species’ eggs, help count the egg masses for our survey, and compare the differences between pools and ponds, drawing conclusions about which will have the most successful populations. Participants do not need to have attended the first class in order to attend this one.

Calling all young birders and aspiring birders! Join us on a walk to identify birds migrating through Maine as well as those that spend the season nesting and raising their young here. Creating a Miniature Garden (Ages 8+) (Sold Out)

This fun and family-friendly hands-on workshop will have you exploring your gardening creativity—in miniature! First, learn about and draw inspiration from several different types of miniature gardens including “fairy gardens” and Japanese gardens. Then, using wide shallow containers, small plants, fairy garden accessories, and other tiny elements, create a personalized miniature garden to take home. All materials are provided, and registration includes admission for a parent and child. Families are encouraged to work together, but if parents would like to make their own miniature garden, please register separately so that we can plan for supplies.

Pastel Society of Maine: Youth Workshop (Ages 8-12)

This workshop introduces young artists to color and to the abundant life that emerges when we translate a 3D garden landscape into 2D. With the help of experienced instructors, participants will explore their botanical and landscape interests, learning how to translate those ideas into beautiful pastel paintings. Technique, demonstration, and personal guidance gives young artists confidence in navigating the pastel medium. Participants receive a small kit of pastel materials and paper and will leave with one piece matted and sleeved for presentation. Instructor Barbara Farcione is a member of the Pastel Society of Maine and on the Board of Directors.

Grow a Garden with Us! (Ages 4-11)

Starting May 2 | Our popular family gardening program is back! Join us this spring as we combine gardening and learning in a fun, rewarding program for children ages 4-11. This unique, parent-led program will guide participants through growing a spring and summer garden. Lessons combine gardening with science, math, English, social studies and art. Families will receive fruit and vegetable transplants and/or seeds and planting instructions weekly. Budding Naturalist: Advanced Spring Botany (Ages 10-16)

Continuing our botanical explorations, we’ll go in search of some of the wildflowers calling the Gardens home. If still blooming, we’ll revisit specimens from the previous session in more depth along with any new flowers that have sprung up. Participants will practice thinking like a botanist, learning more about the plant identification process and using a key to identify specific characteristics of these wildflowers. Participants do not need to have taken the beginner class in order to participate in this class.

Planting a Pollinator Garden (Ages 8+)

Do you have a nature-loving child interested in attracting more pollinators to the garden? This kid-friendly gardening class delves into our native pollinators’ unique adaptations and special flower preferences, reviewing the process of pollination through a flower dissection. Class will then head out into the Gardens to discover some of the best flower choices for a diverse pollinator garden, and participants will receive plants and seeds to take home. iNature Photography Workshop (Ages 10-14)

Monday, June 27-Friday, July 1

Using your iPhone or iPad, advance your digital photography skills in this exciting hands-on workshop. Join artist and iPhoneography innovator Kimberly Post on photographic explorations through the Gardens, learning to capture nature in uniquely creative ways. Back in the classroom, we’ll work with a variety of editing apps to enhance our photos and create images, building a digital portfolio. The week will end with a gallery-style exhibit for family and friends. Please contact the Gardens if you do not have an iOS device, but are interested in taking this workshop.

Paper Art Workshop (Ages 8-14) (Sold Out)

Wednesday, July 6-Friday, July 8

Observe nature and get creative as we delve into the ancient—and modern—techniques of paper arts. Over three days, young artists will create prints from plant materials, play with colors, positive and negative space, layering, and patterns, all resulting in unique works of art. Create mesmerizing patterns and designs using a process called paper marbling, a technique dating back to the 12th century. Learn paper-making, recycling old paper into new, and experimenting with thickness and style. Use Gardens-gathered plant material to add finesse to finished products. On the final day, we’ll use this paper to produce pages and covers for handmade sketchbooks, journals, or notebooks!

Nature Art Camp: Drawing Blooms and Butterflies (Ages 7-12) (Sold Out)

Monday, July 11-Friday, July 15

Young artists put their investigative skills to work as they collect, study, identify, and illustrate the Gardens’ butterflies and the flowers and plants they depend on. Daily, participants will explore and sketch on-location in the Gardens, developing a strong foundation of observation, drawing, and painting skills, simultaneously creating a portfolio of beautiful studies and illustrations using pencil, pen and ink, colored pencil, and watercolor. Students also gain an understanding and appreciation for the important role these pollinators play in our gardens. All art supplies are included with this camp.

Hélène Farrar has taught and worked in the visual arts for twenty years, actively exhibiting in commercial, nonprofit, and university galleries in New England, New York City, Pennsylvania, Italy, and England. Farrar has a BA in studio art from the University of Maine and an MFA in interdisciplinary arts from Goddard College in Vermont. Hélène currently owns and operates a private art school out of her Maine “farmhouse” studio where she holds a variety of workshops and classes for children and adults.

Discover all that you can see, smell, hear, feel, and even taste as we tour the Lerner Garden of the Five Senses together, experiencing nature and the Gardens in a whole new way. Summertime is prime butterfly time! Join us to explore our Native Butterfly and Moth House, as well as other butterfly hot spots at the Gardens. Students will leave with an even greater appreciation for—and understanding of—these lovely creatures. Identifying & Preserving Summer Wildflowers (Ages 10+)

Identify and collect summer wildflowers, learning to develop your botany skills with resident botanist and Director of Plant Science & Collections, Melissa Cullina. We’ll visit the herbarium, an exciting resource where Melissa and her volunteers have worked to preserve more than 5000 plant specimens! Students will join in, learning how to preserve the flowers collected during class. Each participant will receive their own plant press to take home. Gardens admission included.
