Signs of the Seasons Youth Volunteer Training (Ages 10-18)
May 12 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Calling all young citizen scientists! Do you look forward to seeing the first songbirds and flowers in springtime? Do you enjoy listening to the peepers on spring evenings, or the tree frogs calling on hot summer afternoons? Volunteers of all ages are helping scientists to understand the local effects of global climate change through the Signs of the Seasons community science program by recording the timing of seasonal changes like these.
Beth Bisson and Esperanza Stancioff from the Maine Sea Grant and University of Maine Cooperative Extension programs, respectively, will provide an introduction to Signs of the Seasons for youth ages 10-18 and their parents/guardians. This hands-on, socially distanced training will teach young volunteers to identify and record seasonal changes in plants, birds, and amphibians. After this session, participants will be invited to join a follow-up virtual session to learn how to record their observations in an online database.
