What’s in Bloom – July 11, 2023

What's In Bloom

Across the gardens, the often seen but nonetheless beautiful blossoms of the common milkweed are blooming – this plant is a favorite food source of the Monarch butterfly! Coming into bloom this week are false sunflower (Heliopsis), beebalms (Monarda), and coneflowers (Echinacea). Two plants of particular interest: the catkin–like flower stalks of the ‘Lilac Squirrel’ burnet near the tool arbor in the Bibby and Harold Alfond Children’s Garden that resemble fluffy caterpillars and the warm–toned, cheerful shades of the common yarrow freshly planted in the Terrace Garden bed overlooking the path to the Bosarge Family Education Center.
